Civil War Reunion

This photo of a group of unidentified men is part of a collection donated to the Decatur County Historical Society by Sarah (Woodfill) Redelman in 1982.
By scanning a small section at a high resolution, we are able to get a closer look at the GAR medal worn by the man in the middle. This picture may have been taken at one of the regimental reunions held at Greensburg in the early 1900's. The exterior of the courthouse is a clue that the photo was taken prior to 1903, when the original brick was covered with stone-like stucco.

  1. Several years ago I bought a pin with the following on it: Annual Reunion, 6th Indiana Infantry, Greensburg, Indiana Sept 20th, 1911. I looked up the event in the Greensburg paper for that time period at the Indiana State Library. The article states that out of 203 soldiers who had registered for the reunion only a few were residents of Greensburg.
An article from September 14, 1911, announces the schedule for the reunion. They assembled at the Courthouse and had a campfire by the Courthouse at 7 PM that night. The announcement was signed by A. S. Creath, B. F. McCoy, and H. B. Sherman.

    1. Mary, thank you so much for sharing this information! This could definitely help us identify some of these men! -Lori

  2. My great grandfather was in the 6th Indiana Infantry and lived in Vernon and Greensburg throughout his life. I am hoping one day to find a photo of his regiment and would love to see a photo of the pin that Mary posted about.

    1. Jennifer,
Feel free to email me directly if there's anything I can do to help you research your great grandfather. What was his name? I will be sure to post any other regimental photos I come across. -Lori Osting,

    2. Lori,
His name was William James Rose. I just sent you an email. He is my brick wall.....
