New Point's Sears Catalog Home

8357 East 200 South, New Point

This New Point craftsman bungalow was built in 1928 with a kit purchased from Sears & Roebuck. The kit would have been delivered by rail and assembled onsite. In the 1999 Indiana Landmarks survey, this home received an "outstanding" rating for its historical significance.

From 1908–1940, Sears, Roebuck and Co. sold about 70,000 homes through their mail-order Modern Homes program. Over that time Sears designed 447 different housing styles. The New Point house was built with the "Osborn" kit, which would have cost $1,163 to $2,753.

New Point takes first net title over St. Paul

The 1942-43 high school basketball season was a tough one. The world was focused on WWII, tires and gasoline were rationed, and many coaches were serving in the military. In fact, five of the seven county school teams were coached by the school principal. Principal James Clements led the New Point Little Giants to their first county tourney win on January 30, 1943 - 70 years ago today. Senior players were Earl Beagle, Marion Marsh, Floyd Milburn, Bennie Thackery, and Robert Thackery.
